About the Industry Mentoring Network in STEM (IMNIS)
The Industry Mentoring Network in STEM (IMNIS) programme is an Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (The Academy) initiative aimed at narrowing the cultural gap that exists between industry and academia in Australia. The programme links STEM PhD students with qualified and experienced, senior-level industry mentors who can provide advice and connections for industry-based STEM careers during a year-long formal mentoring relationship. One of the streams offered by the programme is 'MedTech and Pharma' which is supported by funding from the MTPConnect Project Fund Programme.
AusBiotech is a proud foundation supporter of the IMNIS programme. AusBiotech supported the IMNIS pilot in 2015 by recruiting industry mentors for the MedTech and Pharma stream of the programme, and then from early 2017 to July 2019, AusBiotech was a consortium partner on the IMNIS project. We recruited mentors, and provided event and relationship management support as the programme expanded nationally.
Programme evolution
The IMNIS programme was launched in Victoria in 2015 by the Victorian Premier, the Hon Daniel Andrews and the then Chancellor of Monash University, Dr Alan Finkel, with an industry pilot focused on biotechnology, and sponsored by AusBiotech. After a successful first year, in 2016, the programme was recognised with the BHERT Best Higher Education and Training Collaboration Award in and received funding from MTPConnect to make the programme available throughout Australia in 2017. Since 2018, the programme has been running across Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland with approximately 300 mentoring pairs established across 20 universities.
Mentoring through IMNIS
Help students gain a better understanding of the opportunities outside of the academic environment, enhance networks and narrow the cultural gap between industry and universities and prepare a new generation of industry-ready PhD graduates by mentoring a STEM student.
