16 January 2020:  AusBiotech was delighted to welcome NSW Government’s $25 million commitment to building an advanced gene and cell therapy manufacturing facility at the Westmead Health Precinct. The facility will produce specialised gene therapy tools at clinical grade, with the aim to expedite research and translate it into cures for serious genetic diseases affecting children.

9 December 2019:  A new report shows the life sciences industry will be more seriously impacted than other sectors of research and development, by cuts proposed in a new Bill on the new Research and Development Tax Incentive (RDTI).

AusBiotech today released a report - R&D Tax Incentive: Additionality and spillovers for the life sciences industry - illustrating for the first time the disproportionately negative effects that the biotech sector is now facing.

5 December 2019:  Despite a Senate Inquiry’s recommendation to examine the impacts before actioning, newly proposed cuts to the Research and Development Tax Incentive (RDTI) Bill were tabled without notice today, astonishing the biotech industry. The vast majority of SMEs and companies in life sciences will be disadvantaged in their claims if the proposed changes go ahead.

As the most critical policy for the industry, the proposed changes have the potential to significantly damage the sector, and ultimately impact its capacity to deliver new, innovative treatments to Australian patients.

Mr Chuck Feeney was also awarded the inaugural AusBiotech Life Sciences Legacy Award in recognition of his tremendous and unprecedented support of the Australian life sciences ecosystem across many decades. 

30 October 2019: A new sector ‘snapshot’ has revealed momentous growth in the Australian life sciences sector over the past two years. The research confirmed that there is a 12 per cent growth in the number of organisations, growing from approximately 1,654 to 1,852, and a five per cent growth in employees, increasing from 232,213 people to 243,406 between 2017 and 2019.

30 May 2019:  AusBiotech’s annual survey of biotechnology industry CEOs shows that while Australia's strength in life sciences remains in a growth trajectory, there is a worrying fall in business sentiment across the sector with uncertainty over the fate of the R&D Tax Incentive.
